With a neutral, design-forward palette, Renew is available in two stocked colorways—Terra Clay (pictured) and Terra Oatmeal.

Room & Board has long been a prominent name in the world of sustainable design, but with the debut of its latest product—the Renew chair—the Minneapolis-based furniture brand is taking its commitment to eco-friendly production even further. Crafted from natural, recycled, and renewable materials and brought to life through collaborations with domestic manufacturers and reclaimed-wood artisans, the 99% bio-based upholstered chair makes a sustainable statement.

“Renew felt like a fitting name for this introduction, as it captures the essence of Room & Board’s commitment to continuous design innovation and sustainable sourcing,” says Emily McGarvey, director of sustainability, in a prepared statement. “Our design team prioritized recycled and renewable materials, knowing we strive for the highest quality materials with the lowest carbon footprint.”

Launched late June, Renew prioritizes both form and function for a comfortable, yet supportive seat. With its clean lines, gentle curves, and refined details, the chair is cozy, classic, and current—all at once.

A Closer Look at the Craft

At first glance, it’s the design-forward details that catch the eye. Welt-trimmed cushions, tailored upholstery, and the Rye-stained wood frame emphasize Room & Board’s signature style. But what lies beneath the surface is equally compelling:

  • Natural Cushioning: The seat structure is made of natural latex cushioning and wrapped in wool fiber from Dutch textile innovator ENKEV. The layers are held together with fasteners made from 95% recycled content.
  • Conscious Fabrics: The chair can be upholstered in Terra, a durable and OEKO-TEX®-certified fabric made up of 47% wool, 34% cotton, and 19% nylon.
  • Reclaimed Urban Wood: Each hardwood frame is crafted from reclaimed urban oak sourced through Cambium, a Maryland-based company that gives new life to fallen trees by working with local sawmills and workshops.

Rooted in Responsibility

To bring Renew to life, Room & Board tapped two trusted partners: Cambium, for its responsibly sourced urban wood, and Precedent, a North Carolina-based manufacturer known for its high-quality craftsmanship.

The launch also reflects Room & Board’s larger mission outlined in its 2024 impact report—including the goal of introducing a 99% bio-based upholstered chair in 2025. With Renew, that goal arrives right on schedule.
