The Tastemaker: With more than 25 years in the industry, Minneapolis-based interior designer Martha Dayton has built a reputation for creating spaces that are cohesive, layered, and deeply reflective of her clients. In fact, her eponymous firm recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of translating lifestyles into interiors that feel authentic, refined, and sometimes playfully unexpected. “My design philosophy is generally to reflect my clients,” Dayton says. “I want them to feel like when they walk in, it’s true to who they are … but I also like to always have an element or two that maybe pushes them out of their comfort zone—because almost every time that ends up being their favorite thing.”
The Object: Dayton’s current obsession is the Silas Lounge Chair, a handcrafted piece by Los Angeles-based designer Todd Hewitt of Last Ditch Design. Although not an extensive collection (yet!), Hewitt’s work is characterized by remarkable detail, fluid curves, and sculptural woodworking that Dayton admires. She has used the Silas Lounge Chair in multiple projects—upholstered in custom fabrics ranging from neutral to bold, graphic midcentury patterns—proving its adaptability, as well as its artistry. “It’s of the highest quality,” Dayton notes. “It’s all hand done—every detail.”
In Her Words: “It is a brilliantly executed sculptural piece that lends itself to myriad fabrics, and it’s exquisitely comfortable,” she says. “The details are smooth, sort of elegant, and sexy. It’s its own little art piece. It’s not dictated by anything around it.”
