This Idyllic Yard is an Extension of its Home

A layered outdoor space brings home life into the landscape, with a formal garden atmosphere and a floorplan of its own
Intentional structures and distinct rooms give this layered outdoor space a formal garden vibe, and act as a continuation of this elegant home.

Following this home’s dramatic renovation, the homeowners shifted their attention to the landscape to transform the home’s broad lawn into a layered outdoor living space. This residential landscape design by TEA2 Architects and Topo LLC is a series of purposeful outdoor rooms, which extend the home elegantly into the surrounding environment, artfully blending architecture and landscape.

Layered stone terraces emerge from the back of the house, melding architectural design with the natural environment, creating a generous pathway through the home’s landscape, leading to defined, open zones for dining, relaxing, and walking.

The pool house doubles as an architectural garden folly.

The pool house and outdoor kitchen are the anchors and major focal points of the outdoor space—serving as functional garden follies that add architectural charm and character to the backyard. The kitchen—a convivial hub for cooking and entertaining—features a sweeping copper-capped roof that’s purposeful, eye-catching, and reflects the architecture of the home.

Ample plantings add texture and color and reflect the seasons, and together with the spacious scale of the surrounding stone and framed views throughout, give a formal garden-like atmosphere to this home’s landscape.

Crafted with restoration and reflection in mind, this idyllic backyard represents the grand possibilities currently being explored in the design of layered outdoor spaces—earning it first place in the Residential Landscape Design category of the 2025 Midwest Design Awards.
