Summer nights possess a magic all their own—string lights twinkling, the din of conversation, the crackle and glow of a fire—all as daylight slowly fades. The best outdoor spaces capture this energy and set the stage for memorable moments with family and friends. With good design, your yard can become the place to celebrate and connect well after sunset.

An outdoor environment fit for evening entertainment begins and ends with lighting. It sets the mood and adds a practical touch, says Steve Schafer, general manager at Milow Outdoors. Good landscape lighting helps you and your guests move around freely in the dimly lit hours, and stunning lighting design brings unforgettable ambience to an idyllic summer night.

Create an Atmosphere

It’s important to get the lighting right. “Just bright enough, not too bright,” says Tiffani Navratil, landscape architect at Keenan & Sveiven, Inc.—otherwise it gets in the way of the day-to-night ambience. Warm, cozy, and thoughtfully placed landscape lighting is a must for evening entertainment, according to Heather Sweeney and Becca Bastyr, senior landscape designers at Mom’s Design Build, who say this creates the atmosphere for meaningful conversations and late nights spent entertaining friends outdoors.

Establishing layers and zones of lighting can also contribute to the mood of your outdoor space at night. “Path lights around patios and pool spaces help define spaces, and having light sources at different distances helps a setting feel less confined,” Schafer says. Dimmers and switches allow you to control the lighting in an area or for a single fixture—this way, you can set the tone, whether you need brighter lights at the dining table for serving a family-style dinner, or gentle illumination all around the yard for a large group of guests.

Define a Gathering Space

“Have a feature to gather around,” says Clayton Johnson, landscape designer at Yardscapes Inc. “Firepits, bar areas, and dining tables are great elements to incorporate.” Present your guests with spaces where they can mix and mingle, places where they feel at ease. Sweeney and Bastyr say that, in Minnesota, a fire element is non-negotiable. With cool evenings common throughout much of the year, they say that a fire feature adds warmth, comfort, and a natural gathering point that keeps people outside longer, no matter the season.

Create focal points around the areas of your outdoor space you already use and enjoy the most. And if you spend a lot of time on the deck or around the table—play it up. Prioritize the spaces you spend the most time in, and build your design around them, Sweeney and Bastyr recommend. And all the experts agree—seating is essential. Make mindful room for relaxation, like comfortable seating beneath a gently illuminated pergola, or comfortable cushions beside the fire.

Add Details That Delight

This firepit and chandelier by Yardscapes Inc. make for an impressive focal point. Incorporate other sensory elements, like a good audio system, or even scents. “Consider fragrances that can enhance your experience, such as wood smoke or night-blooming flowers, and distinguish it from daytime uses,” Navratil recommends.

A great space for outdoor entertainment is about more than firepits and pools. An unexpected touch can go the extra mile at night. “The way lighting bounces off objects creates depth and textures that go unnoticed during daylight,” says Johnson, who says that well-placed lighting can add drama to a space. “I once installed an old cast iron chandelier from an oak tree that was retro-fitted with low voltage light bulbs over a patio space—not only was it unexpected, it created ambience and was also a great conversation piece.”

Water features add both beauty and tranquility, Sweeney and Bastyr say, because the gentle sound of moving water is soothing—and can even help mask unwanted noise from nearby homes or neighborhood activity.

Mind the Nuisances

What would a truly comfortable outdoor space be without climate control—and bug control? Infrared heaters can make your outdoor spaces comfortable between seasons and times of day. Sweeney and Bastyr add that protection from bugs is essential, and recommend automated screens to make indoor-outdoor living effortless, and say that a motorized screen system can transform an outdoor structure into a bug-free retreat at the push of a button.
