Inside this 1937 Minneapolis home, the reimagined kitchen boasts remarkable character. Prior to its transformation, it was a cramped and outdated space that felt disconnected from the rest of the house. Now, it’s functional, elegant, and a showstopping example of a historic kitchen remodel that stays rooted in its architectural past.
Vujovich Design Build, who won first place in the Historic Renovation/Restoration (50 years or older) category for this project in the 2025 Midwest Design Awards took careful, creative steps to bring this kitchen into the present, while honoring the home’s past. Walls were opened to improve flow and select windows were closed to reclaim wall space for cabinetry. A walk-in pantry was added, concealed by a clever decorative custom stained-glass installation that allows light to pass through while concealing the items behind. The central quatrefoil motif echoes throughout the kitchen in the metal grates and iron stair railing.
Custom-stained cabinetry calls to the only original wood in the home—the rich tones of the library. Poured terrazzo floors, Italian marble countertops, and vintage-inspired appliances blend beauty with history, and antique, globally sourced light fixtures reinforce the home’s storied elegance. Another fun surprise is a concealed bookshelf door built seamlessly into the cabinetry that leads to the primary suite, offering discreet access and an element of surprise.
