The Art of Tile

Thoughtfully integrated tilework turns everyday spaces into true works of art

Tile is no longer just a practical choice for kitchens and bathrooms but rather a form of artistic expression. From intricate mosaics and murals to creative installations, today’s tile designs have capabilities of bringing color, texture, and personality to every corner of your home. These three projects, specifically, take the art of tile to new heights.

Tile Wave

In Minneapolis’ Lowry Hill East Residential Historic District, an 1896 home got a bold new look, courtesy of PKA Architecture, Dovetail, and Conlin Rudd Interior Design. The second-floor bathroom, part of a full three-story renovation, features a wave-like tile design that sweeps from the tub to the sink wall, reflecting the clients’ love of color and craft.

Art in Motion

When these Edina homeowners first recruited Lake Country Builders and LiLu Interiors for their primary bathroom project, they envisioned something extraordinary—a one-of-a-kind artwork made entirely of tile. Inspired by the beauty of nature, the installation teems with rich colors, flowing patterns, and unique textures. The design offers a different experience from every angle, drawing the eye with its complexity and creating the illusion of movement within.

Flight of Fancy

This garden-inspired kitchen by SALA Architects and Terra Firma Building and Remodeling was designed to be just as artistic as it is functional. Above the stovetop, a stunning mosaic butterfly mural—designed by artist Josie Lewis and installed by Nick Reuter—soars with impeccable tilework and intricate design elements. The floor by Grow House Grow is equally impressive, serving as a vibrant tapestry that ties the whole room together.
