Born from a shed-like garage, tucked beneath a tree canopy, and inspired by the clients’ love of plants and passion for gardening, this light-filled accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in South Minneapolis is a tropical, Scandinavian-style “treehouse”—and available to rent on Airbnb. An overhead skylight and a picture-frame window illuminate the compact kitchen, where designers squeezed a full-size refrigerator, strategically placed shelving and storage, and more into the ADU’s 550-square-foot design. Butcher block brings a natural touch of warmth into the space, while geometric patterned tile and simple wall art add a bout of personality.
