When it comes to remodels, one of the most common requests from homeowners is for their new space to feel timeless. When a local couple in Medina reached out to Katie Kath, creative director at Jkath Design Build + Reinvent, asking for just that, she knew exactly what to do.

While the entire main level of the couple’s brick Colonial was gutted and updated, the kitchen received the most dramatic transformation. The previous kitchen reflected the early 2000s era in which it was built, heavily saturated in golden oak and featuring an angled island, corner pantry, and less-than-ideal workflow. To remedy the layout problems, the team reoriented the range so the hood aligned with the fireplace surround on the living room wall directly opposite, anchoring both spaces and establishing clear sightlines. The team also borrowed space from the existing kitchen’s footprint to create an elegant pass-through pantry that opens to the dining room.

Now, awash in creamy custom cabinetry, warm wood tones, and sophisticated brass accents, the kitchen is the stunning centerpiece of the home. Handmade zellige tile runs up the range wall to the ceiling, adding subtle texture and artisan flair, while wide-plank white oak floors add the perfect complement. Situated beneath a pair of polished brass pendant lights, the island is a rich, heavy oak, with turned legs and a seamless quartz countertop.

The new pantry makes a bold statement with striking black painted cabinetry, natural soapstone countertops, and porcelain floor tiles custom-cut for a modern take on a classic two-tone pattern.

“A lot of people are worried dark colors will make spaces feel smaller, but adding that color and texture to a small space can actually create a bigger impact,” Kath explains. “It was fun to add that lead-in moment and create that ‘Wow!’ effect.”

Cabinetry was made in-house and customized for maximum flexibility when it comes to day-to-day convenience: Kitchen clutter and appliances are now tucked away with concealed paneling and integrated models, such as a countertop-height rollout drawer to the left of the range perfect for hiding the family’s coffee maker.

“We wanted everything to be very thoughtful and intentional,” Kath says, “and we wanted everything to feel timeless and long-lasting—to be cherished for generations.”

Recreate the Look in Your Kitchen With Stylish Swap-Outs

Love the look, but want more options? Kath recommends swapping the countertops for a natural stone like quartzite or marble.

“I love the warmer veining details of the Estremoz Bianco marble to pair with the dark-stained oak cabinetry on the island, or the Calacatta Borghini Oro honed marble for a more dramatic look,” she says. As for hardware, she suggests unlacquered brass, such as the Perrin & Rowe Southbank faucet or Armac Martin Bakes cabinet handles, for a softer effect.
