For local designer Bria Hammel, a recent trip to Paris afforded an opportunity to experience the culture, charm, and impeccable craftsmanship of the city. Returning for the first time in 15 years, she set out with an evolved approach to travel—one rooted in immersion rather than itinerary. “Instead of trying to see and do everything like a tourist, I now prefer to stay in one place and truly immerse myself in the local culture,” she explains. This intentional mindset allowed her to see the city through an authentic lens.

Known for its art, architecture, and history, Paris was the perfect place for Hammel’s slower, more purposeful exploration. As she strolled the city’s storied streets, she found herself captivated by the many unique elements of Parisian design. “What stood out to me most about Parisian interiors and architecture was the incredible attention to detail,” she says. “Paris is a city where even the smallest architectural details contribute to its undeniable character.”

When asked how she would describe the iconic Parisian design style, she used words like “effortlessly sophisticated” and “a perfect balance of old and new.” Worn herringbone floors, gilded mirrors, and timeworn antiques coexist with modern elements and contemporary touches—resulting in spaces that exude elegance and artistry. “The true beauty is in the details and the character they bring,” she says.

Which Parisian landmarks did you find particularly inspiring?

St. Germain was especially inspiring. The narrow, winding streets with centuries-old buildings and the small cafes spilling onto the sidewalks add to the neighborhood’s charm. The boutiques and antique shops offer a glimpse into French craftsmanship and style. There’s a sense of history around every corner, but it still feels vibrant and alive—making it the kind of place you want to get lost in and soak up every detail.

Tell us about the color palettes, textures, and materials you saw during your trip.

Paris reinforced my love for marble—not just for its elegance but also for its uniqueness and natural imperfections. I’ve always been drawn to materials that tell a story, and this trip reminded me to embrace those organic details rather than focus solely on durability. I also found myself inspired by the effortless mix of styles throughout the city, [such as] classic architecture paired with contemporary pieces [and] antiques thoughtfully placed in more modern spaces. It’s that contrast that brings depth and character to a design, and I’m excited to lean even more into that balance in my work.

What was your favorite find while antiquing?

Our antique shopping experience in Paris was incredible! We found quite a few treasures to bring home. One of my favorite finds was a vintage sketch of an actor, created by an artist who would illustrate performers for the local newspaper, from the 1800s. It felt like such a special piece of history, and I couldn’t resist adding it to my personal art collection. I love collecting art when I travel and displaying it on my gallery shelving—mixing pieces from different places and time periods. There’s something so meaningful about bringing home a piece with a story. It becomes more than just decor—it’s also a memory of the trip.

Where would you like to go next?

I’m really looking forward to my upcoming trip to Croatia this spring! It’s a country I’ve never visited before, and I’m excited to explore its beautiful cities and immerse myself in its rich history. I can’t wait to experience everything Croatia has to offer—from the stunning coastline to the ancient architecture—and learn more about its culture and heritage.
