Bright and Airy

This 40-square-foot pantry space by Kell Architects transformed the home’s back entrance into valuable storage space for the kitchen. The newly added cabinetry features roll-out and bin storage and includes additional prep space, too, acting as an expansion of the original kitchen. Birch butcher block tops tie into the kitchen’s existing birch cabinetry and is accented by painted antique jade cabinets, plus matching floor tile. The pantry’s new windows make the pantry space a perfect spot to brew morning coffee, before sipping it in the adjacent, existing breakfast nook. Finally, the tangerine dream wallpaper doubles down on the brightness of the new and improved kitchen space.

A Perfect Fit

This historic Queen Anne remodel by Studio Day and Edgerton & Co. breathes new life into the home’s kitchen. A large bank of windows overlooking the back gardens and brings in much-needed light. Its smart, colored cabinetry was designed with a decorative band that pulled in a motif lining the peaks on the exterior of the home. The entry floor has a bold checker pattern made from historic reproduction Victorian era tile and a Murano glass vintage light fixture, and the dining room features custom-made wainscotting. Accentuating the additional height added to the space through the remodel, the wallpaper to highlight the new, grand scale and ceiling height.

Balance Is Everything

In a historic Victorian home remodel, traditionally smaller and segmented spaces were opened up by Chisel Architecture and Highmark Builders, along with interior designer Prospect Refuge Studio, bringing modern day features to this vintage home. Colorful cabinetry in the kitchen and wet bar, plus the dramatic wallpaper lining the hall and bar area, create visual connections between spaces through refined, modern aesthetic touches.

Storybook Charm

This 1900s Minneapolis mansion renovation by Albertsson Hansen Architecture and Interior Design and Holly Home Renovations includes an eclectic mix of art, antiques, and collected objects that give soulful, lived-in character alongside bright colors throughout, bringing personality and storytelling to the forefront of the new design. The bedroom continues the home’s eclectic theme with a vintage Georgia O’Keeffe flower print that is mirrored in the surrounding textiles and wallpaper. Crocheted pillow shams add a homemade touch, and vintage books line the color-drenched shelves, giving the bedroom a storybook sense of comfort and quiet retreat.

This dark and moody library by Hendel Homes and Studio M blends old-world craftsmanship with bold, modern design flourishes. For this project, preserving the room’s large-scale built-in bookcases was a top priority when tying it into the home’s aesthetic updates. Every inch of original millwork was refreshed, and integrated backlighting was added to create a warm glow and highlight these defining architectural features. In doing so, the design-build team highlighted the craftsmanship of the original woodwork while adding a contemporary, gallery-like atmosphere through lighting design that avoids harsh overhead illumination.

Vintage Vibes

Celebrating the vintage character of this kitchen, Randolph Interior Design and their client, along with Frontier Custom Builders, chose to play up its original 1970s architecture. The kitchen has bright orange custom cabinetry, color-matched to retro Big Chill appliances. Kicking its retro aesthetics up a notch, the design also features a disco ball-inspired mirrored tile backsplash. Cambria Brittanicca Gold countertops and neutral gray counter stools balance the reflective surfaces with a grounded, modern edge.
