Wine rooms are essential for homeowners who are avid fans of the grape—especially as your bottle collection grows. These spaces have a highly functional purpose, preserving and protecting your investments, while also displaying prized collections, and serving as an impressive focal point when entertaining. Plus, they make it easy to pluck a bottle from the shelf whenever you need.
Storage space within a small footprint, good lighting, considered materials, and other design details can make all the difference in creating a dreamy space for your wine. Take notes from these four wine rooms that put thoughtful design, sophistication, and functionality at the forefront.
Memorable Makeover

Spacecrafting
In this remodeled 1940s home along the shores of Lake Minnetonka, designed by O’Hara Interiors and MDS Remodeling, one of the most dramatic transformations was the conversion of a modest walk-through butler’s pantry into a striking wine room. An impressive collection of nearly 1,000 bottles are now housed in a space that elevates presentation and accessibility.
To achieve this, the design team reimagined the existing pantry by splitting it in two: one half now serves as a hidden, everyday storage pantry connected to the kitchen, while the other was completely transformed into a custom wine room that opens directly into the dining space. This intentional positioning makes the collection a visual and social centerpiece, giving guests a glimpse into the homeowners’ travels, tastes, and traditions. An industrial-inspired metal and glass door forms the room’s threshold and rich walnut with a no-effects finish lines the walls. Thoughtfully integrated LED lighting highlights each bottle from behind.
Honoring Tradition

Spacecrafting
This sophisticated wine cellar from Swanson Homes and Carbon 6 Interiors on the lower level of a rambler celebrates both functionality and atmospheric design through genuine vintage elements and exceptional craftsmanship. Inside, elder cabinetry provides thoughtful storage, and the actual wine barrel adds vintage flair, harkening to European wine cellars rather than a modern storage room.
Strategic positioning near the entertainment zone creates a seamless flow between wine storage and the adjacent bar area, allowing for effortless transitions from selection to service. The space honors the ritual of wine collecting while supporting the practical needs of entertaining.

Custom Solutions

Spacecrafting
Nestled within a luxurious Lake Minnetonka home, this custom wine room by Lake Country Builders showcases thoughtful design, artisanal craftsmanship, and smart functionality in a compact footprint. A combination of open wine racks, custom built-in cubbies, and vertical metal wall-mounted wine storage provides extensive and organized capacity for both wine and spirits. The suspended glass shelving adds a modern edge while offering convenient access to top-shelf liquors, all backdropped by a mirror to enhance light and depth in the room. Natural stone walls with warm walnut cabinetry, create a rich contrast in textures and tones.
Other clever design elements—like hidden ventilation, under-shelf lighting, and inset task lighting—ensure both preservation and display are optimized. The space also includes a sleek under-mount sink, bar tools, and glassware storage, making it as functional as it is beautiful.
Showstopping Moment

Virtuance
To honor the homeowners’ love of travel and passion for collecting, Style & Structure designed a lower level wine cellar to help preserve their growing collection of fine wines and to add an impressive visual feature of the home. Custom wine racks were crafted from cedar, bringing in a rich, warm texture while also providing ideal conditions for wine storage. To complement the tailored look, luxury flooring was selected, offering both durability and refined aesthetic appeal. The lighting was thoughtfully layered to enhance the atmosphere; dimmers allow for a soft, moody glow when the space isn’t in active use, while brighter illumination helps when selecting a bottle or entertaining guests.
One standout feature is the use of sleek glass doors, making the wine cellar a focal point as soon as one enters the lower level, inviting guests to admire the collection.
