Since 2008, Minneapolis-based company Wood From the Hood has been creating custom-made furniture and home goods out of urban trees otherwise headed to the waste stream. While its high-quality pieces have mainly been used in commercial spaces, the business has been waiting for the opportune time to pivot—to provide a furniture line that would save more landfill-bound trees, sequester carbon emissions, and supply local homeowners with budget-friendly products. That time is now—meet Evergreen by Wood From the Hood.
When naming the contemporary furniture line, Designer Kelley Hermes envisioned a title that encompassed Wood From the Hood’s mission and vision for Minnesota. “I wanted to reference both the green, sustainable nature of what Wood From the Hood does as a business,” Hermes says, “and also the timeless, everlasting quality of these pieces and designs.” Within the line, there are multiple collections suited for buyers.
Evergreen features three collections named after Twin Cities parks: Crosby, Longfellow, and Kirkwood. Although each collection is forged from reclaimed ash with contemporary, minimal, and sleek designs, each boasts unique qualities too, some with assorted sizes and finish options to choose from. Whether clients are looking for a new desk or a dining room table, furniture pieces start at $1,799. “They’re not made by machines, and they’re not made with robots,” Hermes says. “They’re each made by hand.” Other tier modeled factors also influence a product’s price.
Customers can decide whether they would like their new piece of furniture assembled and delivered, assembled and picked up, or shipped unassembled in a flat pack. According to Hermes, the pieces were intentionally crafted for easy assembly, only requiring four screws. No matter which assembly method clients would prefer, the Evergreen line by Wood From the Hood is available now.
Crosby
Available in one size only, the Crosby desk draws from modern aesthetics and the Bauhaus movement. The 4-foot, honey-stained desk features layered legs with grooves that create a striped, clean-line effect, perfect for small spaces like a home office or miniature dining.
Kenwood
The Kenwood Collection combines playfulness and professionalism. Choose from either a 5- or 7-foot dining room table that comes in three fall-inspired finishes: espresso brown, a warm honey, or ebony with chestnut undertones. With exposed wood joinery, clients can select one finish for the tabletop and another for the legs, or, for a sleek look, the stain can remain the same throughout the design.
Longfellow
With the greatest room for versatility and customization, the Longfellow Collection boasts two sizes (5 or 7 feet), three finishes (espresso brown, honey, or ebony), and two leg styles (squared or rounded), not to mention a unique mounting system that allows the legs to be attached at either a 90- or 45-degree angle.
