Cabins have an heirloom quality. The family cabin is a place treasured among relatives, where memories are built, often handed down from one generation the next. The design of this new cabin perfectly captures that spirit.

In order to make this newly built cabin feel vintage and lived in, the team at Heather Peterson Design spent more than a year scouting for antiques to fill the space. They searched high and low for vintage furnishings, art, and table settings that felt like they belonged—conjuring up stories about which relative would have left each piece to the space. A grandmother? A great-aunt?

This keen eye for curation earned Heather Peterson Design second place in the Use of Art, Antique, or Collection category in the 2025 Midwest Design Awards. The mix of objects bring the precious energy of hand-me-downs to the cabin, despite the fact that the clients didn’t have heirlooms of their own to decorate the space.

The cabin is now home to a lively collection of vintage furnishings, including a variety of wicker pieces from different eras, plus vintage paintings and framed ephemera, including book pages, paint by numbers, and retro puzzles—all featuring themes of flora, fauna, and landscapes.
