Use Tile to Add Dimension and One-of-a-Kind Detail
Patterns and designs for tile change frequently. As of late, what’s becoming increasingly popular in today’s bathroom designs, according to Kirsten Froelich, senior director of design and product development at The Tile Shop, is patterns with curved lines along with floral and botanical patterns, which she says are the company’s most popular prints for tiles. Fluted tiles with round and straight edges are adding texture and dimension to baths, Froelich notes, and the handmade look is also big, such as the real handmade tiles from Morocco, also known as zellige, “that are works of art,” she adds.
Froelich says the classic checkerboard pattern is a frequent favorite, too, and also notes that large format tiles are fashionable. “Tile is getting bigger every year!” she emphasizes.
Mixed-finish tiles are also trending. “I personally love these,” she shares. “We’ve developed several patterned tiles with a matte background and a raised, glossy surface design. They add interest and have an artistic ‘hand-painted’ look.”

Textural Kitchens are In
According to Amber Ranzau, interior designer, Allied ASID at Cologne’s Modern Design Cabinetry, warmer whites, greige tones, and shades of green are on the rise in the world of cabinetry this next year, as stark white kitchens are phased out. Texture is also in. Ranzau cites features such as reeded glass, woven caning, and fluted panels as examples of textured cabinets. White oak continues to prevail, “specifically rift white oak as the most requested wood species, but we have seen an uptick in walnut lately,” Ranzau explains.
Ranzau says she witnessed pink, red, and mauve accents at a recent kitchen and bath show, and dual colors in the kitchen will continue to be popular, too. “Kitchens can incorporate two colors pretty easily, whether it’s a paint finish on the uppers and tall cabinets (like the fridge, wall oven, or pantry cabinet) and a stained wood color on the island and bases,” she notes.
As for cabinet profiles, flat panels and shaker styles are still in vogue, but Ranzau says people are really clamoring for details such as beading and fluting inside the door panels to add details to specialty areas, like in the top row drawers in the primary bath, or on a dining room cabinet to set it apart.

Trend Alert: Custom Range Hoods
Gone are the days of cookie-cutter range hoods. Minneapolis’ World CopperSmith Inc. is creating customized, on-trend hoods, like models with a “mixed metal” look, which Ryan M. Grambart, founder and CEO, says, “continue to be hot.” The company’s CX4 model “has been very popular” as Grambart says, and features an arch shape with stylish rivets.
