Groveland Gallery’s summer lineup features two compelling exhibitions that explore the interplay of light, perception, and abstraction. Opening July 19 and running through Aug. 30, “La Nuit Américaine” by Greg Graham and “Double Vision: Stereoscopic Textiles” by Tim Harding offer distinct, yet complementary perspectives on visual storytelling.
Greg Graham | ‘La Nuit Américaine’
In this exhibition, St. Paul-based artist Greg Graham presents a new series of gouache paintings inspired by American pop culture and the energy of the night. Focused on everyday moments and ordinary environments, his works explore color, composition, and minutiae.
The title “La Nuit Américaine”—French for “American night”—has layered meaning. It references a filmmaking technique that simulates nighttime scenes during daylight, as well as the 1973 François Truffaut film of the same name, which delves into the artificiality of art and cinema. “The paintings in this series respond to the multiple connotations of this expression,” Graham says, in a prepared statement.
Tim Harding | ‘Double Vision: Stereoscopic Textiles’
Making his Groveland Gallery debut, textile artist Tim Harding presents large-scale, layered fabric works that exude depth and dimension. The pieces seen in this exhibition shift with the viewer’s perspective, offering dynamic visual experiences shaped by light, texture, and movement.
“As a career textile artist trained as a painter, I’ve always been fascinated by the ambiguous line between abstraction and representation,” Harding explains. “The pieces from this series grew out of dramatic low light sources I used in my nighttime photography. The highlights and deep shadows can break and image into components of pattern and texture while creating illusions of depth and motion.”
