This weekend, the Twin Cities’ modernist legacy will take center stage as Docomomo US/MN hosts its annual Minn Mod Fall Home Tour. On Saturday, Sept. 13, architecture and design enthusiasts will have the opportunity to step inside 12 privately owned homes—the largest lineup in the event’s 16-year history.
The one-day, self-guided tour spans both Minneapolis and St. Paul, highlighting neighborhoods shaped by some of the region’s most forward-thinking architects. Carl Graffunder, Close Associates, James Stageberg, and Bergstedt & Hirsh defined Minnesota’s architectural standards of the mid-20th century—and their work remains just as relevant and livable today.
The day is divided into morning and afternoon tours, concluding with an evening reception in St. Paul.
Morning: The Luella Anderson Addition

The tour begins on the Minneapolis side of the river with the Luella Anderson Addition, tucked between the Longfellow and Howe neighborhoods. This 38-acre site, once owned by the University of Minnesota (U of M), sat untouched for decades before developer Marvin Anderson transformed it in 1959. Curved streets throughout the neighborhood were named for past university presidents, while the entire development was named after Anderson’s wife, Luella.
Marvin enlisted architects with ties to the U of M to design modest, modern homes for the neighborhood, which today remain a showcase of midcentury living. Morning tours will also extend to homes along Edmund Boulevard in Minneapolis and Mississippi River Boulevard in St. Paul.

Afternoon: Stonebridge Boulevard
In the afternoon, the tour shifts to Stonebridge Boulevard in St. Paul, a neighborhood named after one of the city’s grandest estates. Once the property of industrialist Oliver Crosby, Stonebridge evolved into a modernist enclave after the Crosby mansion was razed in the 1950s. What was once considered unbuildable land on a bluff became an opportunity for young architects to test new midcentury building techniques.
Evening: A Historic Waterfall Finale
The tour concludes with a reception at 278 Stonebridge Blvd., where guests can gather in the backyard to see one of the original Stonebridge Estate waterfalls—recently restored by the current homeowners.
