When one door closes, another one opens—a sentiment reflected in Story & Teller’s recent decision to bid farewell to its beloved North Loop storefront. “I am heartbroken, [but] I am also ready for things to be and feel differently,” says Rachel Cafferty, founder, in the store’s email announcement.

Unfortunately, her story is not uncommon. “Store closures have spiked to the highest level since COVID, and it is more critical than ever for folks to rally behind the businesses that make our communities so much more vibrant and connected,” Caffery explains.

The boutique first opened its doors in April 2024, immediately bringing a new energy and excitement to the neighborhood. From the very beginning, Cafferty had a clear vision of exactly what Story & Teller could be: a hybrid business concept that combined retail and design services, uplifted talented makers and small businesses, and connected the community through a curated calendar of events. “Sometimes, you realize a dream was viewed through a rosy lens,” she says. “Sometimes, you live it and discover it isn’t what you need, and that’s entirely OK. It’s OK to let go, pivot, reset, [and] restart—again and again and again.”

But this decision does not signify the end for Cafferty’s dream. Instead, it marks a turning point, opening the door to new possibilities. “I’m not giving up on my dreams, just allowing myself to pivot and letting them blossom in new ways,” she explains.

February will serve as a “grand finale” for the storefront, with a packed schedule of events to give customers one last chance to support and shop in person. And starting March 1, the shop’s inventory will transition fully online until all remaining items are sold.

But you might be asking, what comes next? For now, Cafferty plans to shift her focus to design and organization services. “I’m excited that this change will allow me to put more time and energy into my decorating and organization services, which was also my long-term vision,” she says. From there, the opportunities are endless. “I’m so happy that Story & Teller allowed me to meet so many incredible people, including many talented design professionals. I can’t wait to welcome the possibilities that lie ahead.”

As she enters this new chapter, she urges the community to “keep shopping, dining, and supporting small in every way that you can.”

The North Loop storefront will officially close on Feb. 23.
